ENabling a Just Energy Transition through Renewable Energy, Governance, and Innovative Sustainable Entrepreneurship (ENERGISE)

The ENERGISE Center, based in South Africa, promotes sustainable and just energy transition. The Technical University of Munich and four South African university partners are involved in the project.

Shaping the green transformation in a socially just manner: The multi-institutional ENERGISE Center (ENabling a Just Energy Transition through Renewable Energy, Governance, and Innovative Sustainable Entrepreneurship) project pursues an interdisciplinary approach that brings together knowledge, methods, and perspectives from various academic disciplines in order to tackle the major challenge of a just energy transition in South Africa.

Based on the funding concept of the “Africa Centers of Excellence,” it rests on three pillars: capacity building, research, and transfer. In the area of teaching and capacity development, the project contributes to the training of young scientists in engineering, politics, and entrepreneurship. At the same time, it aims to help design and implement three living labs for the development of a JET in South Africa.

    Key Actions

African and German teachers, master’s students, doctoral candidates, and postdocs receive needs-based support as part of the project. Tailored offerings range from academic training to joint modules, participation in living labs, and international summer schools, whereby
students acquire the ability to work in diverse, interdisciplinary teams and to develop integrated solutions for complex energy problems using ICT- and AI-supported and interdisciplinary methods.
