What does a just transition look like in different parts of the world? And what can we learn by bringing different perspectives into dialogue?
Understanding just transitions requires more than a single perspective. It calls for dialogue across disciplines, regions, knowledge systems, and lived experiences.
This is the idea behind the second edition of the TRAJECTS Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), Building a Sustainable Future: Essential Dialogues for Just Transitions. Starting on 1 September 2026 through the DIGI-FACE platform, the course brings together diverse perspectives to explore the opportunities, challenges, and different pathways towards just transitions.

Whether you are a student, researcher, practitioner, policymaker, community member, or simply curious about just transitions, this course offers an opportunity to learn from different experiences, engage with diverse perspectives, and deepen your understanding of how just transitions can take shape in different contexts.
What can you expect?
Over 14 weeks, participants will engage with transdisciplinary and intercultural perspectives through:
- recorded lectures;
- curated readings;
- reflective activities;
- discussion forums; and
- a small number of live online sessions that complement the learning experience.
The course involves approximately 80 hours of learning and work throughout the 14 weeks.
Rather than presenting a single pathway, the course encourages participants to explore different ways of understanding and advancing just transitions across diverse contexts.

The course places just transitions at the centre, connecting energy, ecology, economy, and society. Across the 14 weeks, participants will explore a diverse range of themes, including:
- Sustainable Development & SDGs
- Renewable Energies
- Energy Democratisation
- Energy Communities
- Innovation & Exnovation
- Agroecology & PES
- Gender & Just Transitions
- Technology & Economic Policy
- Environmental Education
- Marine & Coastal Systems
Together, these themes offer different entry points for understanding the complex dimensions of just transitions and exploring pathways towards more equitable and sustainable futures.
The course brings together more than 25 speakers from universities, research institutes, civil society organizations, and community initiatives across Africa, Europe, and Latin America. Together, they explore just transitions through academic research, policy perspectives, and community experiences, reflecting the diversity of knowledge needed to address today’s socioecological challenges.
Course information
The official language of the course is English, with English and Spanish subtitles available for all lectures. Participants are encouraged to engage in the discussion forums in English, although contributions in Spanish are also welcome.
Participation is free, and the course involves approximately 80 hours of learning and work over 14 weeks.
Participants who complete at least 85% of the course activities will receive a TRAJECTS certificate of completion.
