The Compelling Need to Strengthen Mining Education and Research
As minerals continue to shape global interests and the energy-transition agenda, the present era has increasingly been described as the Silicon Age. Just as earlier civilisations were defined by materials extracted from the Earth—notably bronze and iron—we can already foresee an era that may rightfully be christened the Critical Minerals Age. Africa is strategically positioned within the global supply equation for rare-earth elements and other critical minerals needed to power the diverse energy and technological futures of civilisation and successive industrial revolutions (Adero, 2025). Against this backdrop, the Kenyan–German Centre of Excellence for Mining, Environmental Engineering and Resource Management (CEMEREM), established at Taita Taveta University (TTU) in 2016 with support from the DAAD and its German partner universities—HTW Dresden and TU Bergakademie Freiberg—can now be appreciated as a capacity-building initiative that arrived at the right time and in the right place: Kenya’s mineral-rich belt. The policy message is direct and compelling: Kenya, and Africa more broadly, must train more mining and mineral-processing engineers to prepare for a new phase of technologically advanced and value-adding mineral development. Kenya’s rare-earth potential, together with Africa’s wider critical-mineral endowment, now lies at the centre of global mining interest.
At a time when leading mining economies such as Australia and the United States are confronting critical shortages of mining engineers—largely because of declining university enrolments and insufficient graduate output—China continues to expand its specialist mining and critical-minerals talent pipeline. This widening talent asymmetry helps explain the strategic urgency behind the Trump administration’s commitment of USD 100 million to mining education, with the ambitious goal of doubling the number of US mining-related graduates within two years. The investment recognises a fundamental reality: mineral security depends not only on geological endowment and technology, but also on a sustained supply of appropriately trained professionals (Trump Pledges $100 Million to Strengthen U.S. Mining Education as America Faces Critical Worker Shortage).
According to the latest World Mining Data 2026, which reports production data for 2024, China (26.9%), the United States (12.1%), Russia (7.9%), India (7.1%), and Australia (6.7%) were the world’s leading mining nations, collectively accounting for 54% of global mineral production. Global production reached 19.4 billion metric tonnes in 2024, compared with 11.3 billion metric tonnes in 2000. Over this period, Asia and Oceania recorded the strongest growth, expanding by 141.9% and 141.7%, respectively. In 2024, Oceania accounted for 6.4% of global production, ahead of Latin America (5.5%), Europe (5.3%), and Africa (4.8%). Latin America surpassed Europe in 2023, while Europe remained the only continent to record a long-term decline, with production falling by 41.8% between 2000 and 2024 (Reichl & Schatz, 2026).
The Dean’s Golden Global Hour with Alumni: A Visibility Revolution for Mining Education
Recognising that authentic testimonials from mining graduates can provide a powerful catalyst for mindset transformation, Taita Taveta University’s School of Mines and Engineering (SME) has introduced a monthly Dean’s Golden Global Hour with Alumni. The inaugural session connected freshers and continuing students with SME alumni working and studying locally and abroad, illuminating the global opportunities available to graduates of TTU’s mining and mineral processing engineering degree programme. Kevin Sang and Stella Cherotich joined from the United States, while other alumni participated from Germany. Alumni based in Kenya complemented these international perspectives with practical insights into locally available career pathways, including entrepreneurship and self-employment.
Kenyan students need not go far to begin a globally relevant engineering journey. Taita Taveta University (TTU) is their Home of Ideas—and a launching pad to the global arena.
The most consequential and enduring prospectus of any university is not the glossy pamphlet it publishes, but the lives its graduates go on to build—locally and beyond borders—with excellence, influence, and intergenerational responsibility.
Young by any measure, TTU is already punching above its weight by producing innovative Mining Engineers who are mentored not merely to achieve professional competence, but also to become the influential global citizens that they are. Credit also goes to TU Bergakademie Freiberg, the world’s oldest university of mining education and research, for having been a partner in co-mentoring them since 2017.
Lessons from the Inaugural Session with Alumni Abroad
A university’s most convincing prospectus is the life its graduates go on to build. That is why the School of Mines and Engineering at Taita Taveta University (TTU) has launched the 𝑫𝒆𝒂𝒏’𝒔 𝑮𝒐𝒍𝒅𝒆𝒏 𝑮𝒍𝒐𝒃𝒂𝒍 𝑯𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝑨𝒍𝒖𝒎𝒏𝒊 𝑨𝒃𝒓𝒐𝒂𝒅—an online platform connecting our students with alumni whose careers now span international engineering practice, research and innovation.
During our inaugural conversation, Kevin Sang shared that his TTU Mining and Mineral Processing Engineering (MMPE) qualification received a substantial equivalence assessment matching an Australian engineering degree, before he later relocated to the USA to work and study—all that time banking on the engineering degree he earned at TTU. Stella Cherotich also joined from the USA and inspired learners at TTU. Imelda Nasubo and Tony Birya reinforced this message by affirming the quality education, intellectual rigour, and problem-solving mindset that TTU instils in its students.
Based on the alumni’s experience, the message remains powerful: an engineering education begun at TTU is assured of global mobility.
TTU is a young and progressive university of mining education and research. Our flagship Mining and Mineral Processing Engineering programme is preparing sustainability-oriented engineers who understand that the future of mining must unite technical excellence with safety, digital innovation, mineral beneficiation, environmental responsibility, and community value.
TTU’s innovation ecosystem is already producing tangible results. At the CEMEREM@10 held in October 2025, four patents were reported among the programme’s achievements—evidence that TTU students and staff are not only learning established knowledge but also creating new solutions.

The apparent difference between Australia’s 6.7% country share and Oceania’s 6.4% continental share arises from different aggregation bases: the country ranking includes bauxite, whereas the continental aggregate excludes it to avoid double-counting with aluminium (World Mining Data 2026). Together with Australia, the top-five countries command a share of more than 60% of the global total (54% is for the first four: China, USA, Russia, and India).
