A Legacy that Continues to Grow
Now extending beyond a decade, the CEMEREM biennial international conference series continues to connect knowledge, people, and possibilities. Taita Taveta University (TTU) announces the 6th CEMEREM Biennial International Conference, to be hosted by Taita Taveta on 6–7 October 2027, with pre-conference training and innovation activities on 4–5 October 2027. The Conference will also continue its celebrated youth-centred tradition, the Young Scientists Contest for university students and young graduates.
The DAAD-supported tripartite collaboration between TTU, HTW Dresden, and TU Bergakademie Freiberg offers fertile ground for contextualising the words of Abdus Salam, the 1979 Nobel laureate in Physics: the deeper we seek, the more is our wonder excited
, the more is the dazzlement of our gaze (Nobel banquet speech). For CEMEREM, we may extend that conviction: the deeper we explore together, the stronger our scholarly network becomes, and the wider extends our horizon for influencing sustainable mining, environmental engineering, and resource management. This, in effect, is our shared faith in scholarship: knowledge must travel beyond conference halls to improve lives.
From Resource Wealth to Shared Prosperity
The conference theme is “Transforming Africa’s Mining and Natural Resource Sectors for Inclusive and Sustainable Development: Advancing Youth Employment, Gender Equity and Food Systems Resilience”.
Africa’s natural wealth carries an intergenerational responsibility. Our task is to translate resource endowment into dignified livelihoods, resilient communities, and environmental stewardship. Five subthemes will guide the conversation:
- Education, skills development, and enterprise creation for youth employment;
- Gender equity, inclusion, and community empowerment;
- Responsible mining, environmental stewardship, and restoration;
- Food systems resilience;
- Critical minerals, value addition, and energy transition.
