As part of the DIES web seminar series on current topics in higher education management, the event themed “The Role of Universities in Society: Opportunities and Challenges for Higher Education Management” will take place on 14 October 2026, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm (CEST). The web seminar will be held in English.
Higher education institutions are a vital part of society. They generate new knowledge, educate and train skilled professionals, foster economic and social innovation, and contribute to addressing pressing challenges for the future. At the same time, the relationship between universities and society is not without tensions. Around the world, higher education institutions are facing growing expectations to demonstrate their societal value and relevance.
Against this backdrop, responding to local and regional needs is becoming increasingly important. For universities, engagement with their communities is an essential dimension of their core missions of study, teaching and research—and a key factor in strengthening their relevance and societal acceptance. Higher education management plays a pivotal role in shaping and supporting these efforts, which extend far beyond the traditional transmission of knowledge.
This DIES Perspectives web seminar will explore the relationship between universities and society and discuss how higher education institutions can respond effectively to societal expectations and needs.
Key questions include:
- What are the major expectations society places on universities, and how can they be addressed effectively?
- What strategies can foster fruitful and mutually beneficial collaboration between universities and local and regional communities?
- Who are the relevant stakeholders, and how can they be meaningfully involved?
- What role does higher education management play in strengthening universities’ engagement with society?
Drawing on different examples of how universities develop and maintain relationships with their local and regional communities, the seminar will provide a platform for an open exchange on current societal needs and expectations, practical challenges, and constructive approaches to addressing them.
