ORCID is a non-profit organization supported by a global community of organisational members, including research organizations, publishers, funders, professional associations, and other stakeholders in the research ecosystem. 

ORCID strives to enable transparent and trustworthy connections between researchers, their contributions, and their affiliations by providing a unique, persistent identifier for individuals to use as they engage in research, scholarship, and innovation activities.

What is the difference between ORCID OR ORCID iD?

People use “ORCID” or “ORCID iD” interchangeably. An ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID), or ORCID iD, is a free unique 16-digit number, called a persistent identifier (PID), associated to a record or profile. ORCID stores automatic links to your research under your ORCID record also called your profile. 

Why do you need an ORCID iD?

• Increase recognition and discoverability of your research by linking your ORCID iD to other identifiers, like Scopus, Web of Science, ISNI, etc.
• Link your research with different formats of your name under one ID
• Distinguish yourself from every other contributor, even those who share your name 
• Gain recognition of your peer reviewing activities
• Help research institutions, funders, publishers, and other organizations better track and support research work.

How to manage your ORCID record

• Optimise your ORCID record by adding your researcher IDs and works, your education, employment history, affiliations, and website presence like Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, and Google Scholar
• Link all the different formats of your name used in your publications
• Connect your ORCID to service providers like publishers and funders by importing records automatically or adding them manually
• Add your ORCID iD with articles, books or chapter submissions to publishers, grant applications, conference papers, presentations, or posters – this a requirement at some publishers
• Keep your record up to date by adding new publications, updating employment history and new grants.
