It was established in response to the devastating famine caused by the eruption of Mount Tambora in 1815, with the aim of improving agricultural practices and food security. Over the years, the university has evolved into a leading research institution, particularly renowned for its programs in agricultural economics, food sciences, and bioeconomy. It offers more than 40 Bachelor’s, Master’s, and doctoral degree programs across three faculties: Agricultural Sciences, Natural Sciences, and Business, Economics, and Social Sciences.

    Established in 1959 in Bellville, near Cape Town, the University of the Western Cape (UWC) has a rich history rooted in the anti-apartheid movement. Initially founded to provide higher education to Coloured students under apartheid, UWC became a significant intellectual center for resistance against the regime. Today, UWC is a dynamic institution committed to excellence in teaching, research, and community engagement. It hosts the DSI-NRF Centre of Excellence in Food Security, co-led by Professor Julian May, focusing on innovative research to tackle food security and nutrition challenges. The university offers over 200 degree, diploma, and certificate programs across seven faculties, including Arts and Humanities, Community and Health Sciences, Dentistry, Economic and Management Sciences, Education, Law, and Natural Sciences.

With multiple campuses, including Bunda, NRC, City, and Open and Distance e-Learning (ODel) centers, LUANAR focuses on enhancing agricultural productivity and sustainability through research, innovation, and community engagement. The university offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs across its faculties, including Agriculture, Food and Human Sciences, Development Studies, and Natural Resources.
