The number one rule for writing, be it for print, online publication, blogging or social media, is to produce great content tailored to the needs of your audience. When writing for any kind of audience, the most important thing to remember is that while you may feel compelled to write, nobody has to read. Most readers who come to your writing will be willing to pay attention, but people’s minds can wander, they can lose interest, or they can simply decide that there is another story or link that looks more interesting and switch to reading that instead. So your key objective is to motivate your audience to read and to keep reading. Know your audience well, and you will be able to pitch your information at the right level and work out how to pique their interest. Better still, in an online environment, you can inspire them to interact with you and get a conversation going.
Once you have identified the audience you want to reach, ask yourself:
• What knowledge does your audience have?
• What pressures might they be under?
• What questions will they be asking?
So the three key questions you need to answer early on in your writing are:
What is this about?
So what? (Why should your audience care?)
