Ten years on, the once-bold vision is an everyday reality. That is why the 5th Biennial International CEMEREM Conference will celebrate CEMEREM's demonstrated Decade of Delivery from 30 September to 01 October 2025 in Taita Taveta, co-organised by Taita Taveta University and the two German partner universities.
Not surprisingly, a decade of international educational and research partnership between TUBAF and Taita Taveta University (TTU) has yielded several innovative products in the form of actionable doctoral and master's theses in mining and natural resource management. This milestone has been made possible under the DAAD-funded Kenyan-German Centre of Excellence for Mining, Environmental Engineering and Resource Management (CEMEREM), the 8th such centre of excellence in Africa and the first one focusing on postgraduate education in engineering and natural resource management.
From September 30 to October 1, 2025, CEMEREM will be celebrating the Decade of Delivery (CEMEREM at 10) with a landmark international conference hosted by Taita Taveta University, Kenya. This event will etch a new milestone in the bilateral partnership between Kenya and Germany, supported through the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), a globally outstanding scholarship programme.
To be hosted by Taita Taveta University (TTU), Kenya, in collaboration with two partner universities in Germany, TU Bergakademie Freiberg and HTW-Dresden, this year’s conference promises to be bigger, bolder, and more impactful than ever.
Sustainable mining is a contested concept, a paradox to some, a polarising topic to many, and a melting point for political debate in the face of climate change diplomacy with respect to emissions quotas and nationally determined contributions (NDCs). The Kenya Mining Investment Conference and Expo 2024 brought together hundreds of international participants drawn from government, the mining industry, academia, and students from higher education institutions. Read on for insights into the innovative approaches and bold strategies shared during this pivotal event by speakers from Taita Taveta University (TTU).

I invite DAAD alumni, German university graduates, and anyone interested in the intersection of science, sports, and education to register and attend this summit. The connections between my journey—from the FIFA World Cup in 1990 to my predictive models in 2018 and 2022—are a testament to the potential of STEM education in Africa and how to socialise it effectively. STEM education is not just for academics but for games such as football, informing creative approaches to coaching and talent development that tap into real-world experiences. To all football fans, educators, investors, and African sports leaders: let’s converge in Nairobi this October. Let’s make African football the best version of itself, grounded in data, intelligence, and the unyielding passion that the game inspires, shall we?
