We have heard you, and we have heeded! After many appeals to allow more time for more abstracts and exhibitions, the Organising Committee of “CEMEREM at 10” is excited to announce that the Call for Abstracts for the 5th CEMEREM Biennial International Conference 2025 has been extended to 15 March 2025. The conference dates remain September 30 – October 1, 2025, preceded by two pre-conference training days.

CEMEREM at 10: A Prolific Legacy in Bilateral Cooperation

The Kenyan-German Centre of Excellence for Mining, Environmental Engineering and Resource Management (CEMEREM) has reached a significant milestone in its mission to advance higher education and training in East Africa. This achievement is evident in several key areas:

  • Postgraduate Scholarships: CEMEREM has awarded numerous master’s and doctoral scholarships in engineering and natural resource management, thereby expanding the pool of highly qualified graduates in East Africa.
  • Equipment Support: By providing essential training equipment to its host institution, Taita Taveta University (TTU) in Kenya, CEMEREM ensures that students receive hands-on, practical education.
  • Annual Summer Schools: Since 2017, CEMEREM has been organising yearly summer schools that facilitate international exposure for both students and faculty, promoting rich cultural exchange and collaboration.
  • Research Stays in Germany: CEMEREM sponsors research visits for graduate students and faculty from TTU to the two partnering German institutions, HTW-Dresden (University of Applied Sciences) and TU Bergakademie Freiberg (The Technical University and Mining Academy of Freiberg)—renowned as the oldest mining university in the world.
  • Biennial Conferences: Every two years, CEMEREM convenes international conferences focused on mining and natural resource management, fostering dialogue, knowledge exchange, and global networking among experts and stakeholders.
  • Flagship Journal: The African Journal of Mining, Entrepreneurship, and Natural Resource Management (AJMENRM) serves as CEMEREM’s central publication, showcasing critical research and innovations that drive progress in these fields.

This epic international event, to be hosted by Taita Taveta University (TTU) in the last quarter of 2025, will bring together global experts, researchers, practitioners, young (student) scientists, government institutions, advocacy groups, and diverse industry stakeholders to exchange ideas, showcase innovations, and chart sustainable pathways for Africa’s mining and natural resources sector.

The previous CEMEREM biennial international conferences (in 2017, 2019, 2021, and 2023) have brought together experts, researchers, policymakers, and diverse industry stakeholders drawn from across the globe, notably from Kenya, Germany, Zambia, Finland, China, South Africa, the USA, Australia, the DRC, Namibia, Ghana, Nigeria, Uganda, Tanzania, Spain, and the UK, among others.

This year, CEMEREM will be celebrating the Decade of Delivery (CEMEREM at 10) with a landmark international conference hosted by Taita Taveta University, Kenya. This event will etch a new milestone in the bilateral partnership between Kenya and Germany, supported through the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), a globally outstanding scholarship programme.
