You are invited to join us on March 27, 2025 at 10am WAT (UTC+1) // 11am CAT // 12 pm EAT for our webinar session on the challenges and solutions to predatory publishing!

We are excited to welcome Susan Veldsman, the Director of the Scholarly Publication Unit at the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAF), as our guest speaker.

In this session, Susan will be speaking on the topic: Building a Trustworthy Research Environment: Challenges and Solutions to Predatory Publishing.

Predatory journals are motivated by profit rather than scholarship, soliciting articles and abstracts from researchers through actions that exploit the pressure on researchers to publish and present their work to their peers.

Through presentation and discussion mode, the session  will ignite conversations around the following themes:

-Introduction to predatory journals

-What constitutes predatory and unethical publishing behaviour

-Root causes of this behaviour

-Prevalence and impact of predatory and unethical publishing practices

-Systemic drivers of predatory and unethical publishing practices

-The impact of predatory publishing on the African research ecosystem.
