INTERESTED IN DISCOVERING THE USE OF AI TOOLS IN PUBLICATIONS AND PROPOSAL WRITING?

Join us for a 2 hour webinar on 29 February 2024 at 14h00 CAT, led by Dr. Kirstin Krauss and Wynand van der Walt.

Topic discovery, proposal writing and the value of AI tools

Research proposals evaluate a doctoral candidate’s ability, ensuring completeness and academic merit. They enable candidates to articulate a position on the thesis problem and an appropriate research approach. A central aspect of proposal writing is research topic discovery, traditionally involving library database searches, literature organization, and reflective idea generation. AI-driven tools now potentially challenge and reshape this process. While beneficial for literature identification and summarization, AI tools may undermine reflexive thinking and skew literature searches.

This 40-minute webinar, led by Dr. Kirstin Krauss, addresses basic scientific claims for guiding research proposals, the importance of generative writing, and the potential risks using AI driven tools during topic discovery.

The workshop is tailored for postgraduate students who are busy with research topic discovery and proposal writing, as well as for emerging supervisors

Kirstin Krauss, Chief Digital Innovation Officer at ICANO International Limited, specializes in digital innovation, business development, and research advisory roles, including AI and start-up coordination. Former academic and Professor, his research centers on ICT, Critical Ethnography, and postgraduate development.

Citation Pollution & Predatory/Questionable Publishing Practices

The session provides background on citation pollution and its effect on scholarly integrity and reputation. It is intended to provide the academic library community with an understanding of how to further engage with their respective decision-makers and policymakers on distinguishing between questionable and legitimate science and the tools currently available to assist with this process. The importance of dealing with illegitimate research on time, both from scholarly communication and research quality perspective, is emphasised.

Wynand van der Walt is the Senior Manager for Innovation, Systems & Collections at Rhodes University.
