DIGI-FACE representatives Karlien Potgieter and Daniela Villani recently participated in the MoodleMoot Africa 2024 Conference, hosted the University of South Africa from September 25-27 in Johannesburg. This hybrid conference brought together educators and digital learning experts from across the continent to explore the evolving landscape of e-learning. By supporting five online participants, DIGI-FACE demonstrated its commitment to making distance education more accessible.
The hybrid format enabled participants, both on-site and online, to engage with discussions on Moodle’s advancements and its application across Africa’s educational landscape. This engagement allowed DIGI-FACE representatives to stay up to date with current trends relevant to e-learning in the region.
The conference theme, “Reclaiming Africa’s Intellectual Futures,” framed discussions and presentations on how Moodle’s advancements can enhance distance and e-learning across Africa’s diverse educational landscape. One of the most exciting topics was the introduction of AI-driven features within Moodle, such as AI-generated content summaries and predictive learning tools. These innovations have the potential to simplify administrative tasks and improve the overall learning experience – ideas that DIGI-FACE is eager to explore for its own initiatives.
A highlight of the event was a keynote address by Moodle’s founder, Dr. Martin Dougiamas. He discussed Moodle’s integration of AI and its potential to support educational needs across Africa. His presentation offered a forward-looking perspective, while acknowledging that the realistic application of these tools in Africa’s diverse educational environment remains a challenge posed by limited infrastructure in various regions.
The event also featured a panel on curriculum redesign and technology’s role in addressing Africa’s skills gap. Panelists emphasised the need for collaboration between industry and academia to ensure students are well-prepared for a digital future. Although these themes are not new, they provided insightful perspectives that DIGI-FACE can incorporate into its mission to support e-learning across Africa.
For DIGI-FACE, attending MoodleMoot Africa 2024 was a good opportunity to gain practical insights. The conference not only updated us on Moodle’s latest features but also sparked innovative ideas for enhancing online learning experiences. Despite reiterating existing challenges like the digital divide, the event fostered connections with like-minded professionals and clarified DIGI-FACE’s position within the evolving landscape of e-learning technologies.
