A new page called CITATIONS, containing information on citation management and open access citation databases, is now available under the Information section on the DIGI-FACE Publication page.
The Citation Tools and Management section provides a short overview of citation styles and available citation manager tools, including open-source products like Mendeley Reference Manager and Zotero.
The Open Access Citation Databases section provides information on two Open Access Citation Databases called OA.mg and OpenAlex. Both these databases include open access and paywall articles.
OA.mg started in 2022 as an open access search engine for academic papers, specialising in Open Access. Information contains summaries of works, the number of times cited and the subject areas of an author’s work. Open Access articles indicate the OA status with six different options to view the full text. A comparative chart of free and subscriptions citation databases shows the number of works, number of full-text Pdfs, and cost.
OpenAlex, a catalogue of the world’s research was launched in 2022. They compete with citation databases like Elsevier’s Scopus and Clarivate’s Web of Science (WoS) paywalled services. A 2024 study shows that more than 60% of all Diamond OA journals not found in Web of Science or Scopus are indexed in OpenAlex. Results include author metrics information such as ORCID, h-index and I10-index counts, number of works, and the total citation counts for these works as well as career path histories and top works. They also indicate the number of cites, cited by related to, the open access status and the estimated APC fee paid per article. Leiden University uses OpenAlex to calculate its research institution ranking and Sorbonne University cancelled their subscription to Web of Science in 2024.
We invite you to explore and evaluate these free citation databases, especially where funding does not allow institutions to subscribe to expensive citation database options like Web of Science and Scopus.
