From October 7 to 10, 2024, the CEMEREM Alumni Seminar on “Lifelong Learning” was successfully held in Voi, Kenya. Taita Taveta University (TTU), in partnership with its long-standing collaborator TUBAF (TU Bergakademie Freiberg), hosted the Seminar.

The event brought together twenty DAAD alumni, including graduates from TUBAF, as well as alumni from other notable institutions such as the University of Bonn, BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg, and Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg. Additionally, esteemed speakers joined from institutions including Universidad de León, University of Johannesburg, Moi University School of Education (Kenya), and Nelson Mandela University (South Africa). A highlight of the seminar was the presence of Dr. Dorothee Weyler, Director of the DAAD East Africa Regional Office in Nairobi and long-time coordinator of the DAAD’s “Centre of African Excellence” initiative.

The seminar’s core theme centred on lifelong learning as a critical element for both professional and personal growth. Expert-led presentations discussed lifelong learning as a vital asset for continued development, equipping participants with the skills and insights necessary to integrate these concepts into their careers. Alumni also shared personal experiences, particularly focusing on lifelong learning’s role in community capacity-building across Africa. A session given by DIGI-FACE (Digital Initiative for African Centres of Excellence) representative generated significant interest, presenting DIGI-FACE’s digital resources for e-learning, professional development, and networking.

Various hands-on workshops and skill-building exercises allowed participants to creatively explore and enhance their own abilities in areas such as communication, teamwork, project planning, and design.

The seminar was further enriched by tours of TTU’s laboratories, a visit to the state gemstone center in Voi, and a memorable safari through Tsavo East National Park, providing participants with stunning views of landscapes and local wildlife – experiences likely to leave lasting impressions.

Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with participants expressing appreciation for the seminar’s organization, impactful content, and expert speakers. As a result, TUBAF alumni have strengthened their connections to their alma mater, expanding both intergenerational and cross-institutional networks. Additionally, a new alumni WhatsApp group was created to continue the engagement and collaboration beyond the seminar.
