The DAAD will host this year’s Networking Conference of Centres of African Excellence from 26-28 November 2024 in Cape Town, South Africa. This prestigious gathering will bring together representatives from all Centres of AfricanExcellence to engage in discourse and promote the exchange of knowledge on best practices.
Last year, after 15 years of financial support, the DAAD and project representatives took the opportunity to reflect on the achievements to date and to discuss the future potential of the African Centres of Excellence.
This year, we want to build on this exchange and explore further aspects of pursuing and sustaining excellence beyond the end of the project. In addition, we intend to address the challenges of building equitable partnerships.
Building equal partnerships in an unequal world
The German Commission for UNESCO recently published a position paper on “Equitable Scientific Cooperation Worldwide” (PDF), to which the DAAD contributed. The paper provides valuable insights into the promotion of equitable partnerships and makes recommendations at various levels, including the (re)shaping of science policy frameworks and research funding, as well as the organisation of the practical scientific process.
